On January 29, 2010, the Workers’ Action Centre and the Ontario Federation of Labour are bringing together union activists for a hands-on workshop on building union strength for workers with part-time, casual and temporary jobs.  The issues the workshop will address include: How do you build solidarity between full-time and part-time or casual workers in a bargaining unit?  How do you fully engage part-time and casual workers in the activities of the union?  How do we bring part-time and casual workers in our workplaces into our union? What are effective strategies to enforce your contract with a shifting workforce? What are the elements of an effective organizing campaign? How should you define the bargaining unit to increase success?

The day will include a choice of focus on either:

1) building the union in existing bargaining units; or

2) new member organizing.

You will hear from union staff and activists about lessons learned from recent organizing and bargaining successes.  You will exchange ideas with other activists facing the same kinds of challenges. We will end the day with a discussion of union responses to the Temporary Foreign Workers’ Program and lessons from other countries for labour law reform.
