The CUPE Ontario Aboriginal Council thanks all CUPE members who took action to support our campaign, Stand up for fairness – For Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women and Girls.

The announcement by the federal government that they are beginning the process of holding a national public inquiry into missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls is due to the efforts of many thousands of Canadians, including you.

CUPE Ontario members overwhelmingly supported the Aboriginal Council’s campaign by sending thousands of postcards to their Members of Parliament demanding an inquiry.  Though it has been a long struggle, and one that is not over yet, it shows that our union can make a difference when we make our collective voices heard.

The Aboriginal Council will continue to be engaged in the inquiry process to ensure that it respects the voices of indigenous women and their communities.  While this announcement is just the beginning, it is important that we acknowledge the role that we have all played in fighting for equality and justice for aboriginal women and girls.

The Aboriginal Council of CUPE Ontario promotes and defends the rights of all Aboriginal workers in our union and in our communities.  They provide advice and assist in the development of CUPE policies to combat racism and discrimination, to increase participation in the union, and to support employment equity.  If you would like to learn more or get involved please contact CUPE Ontario at 905 739-9739 or go to our website at cupe.on.ca.
