UPDATE: The shirts have one again sold out. Thank you for your support. Please consider taking action and sharing Orange Shirt Day.
Orange Shirt Day emerged from survivor Phyllis Jack Webstad’s account of her first day at residential school, where her orange shirt was confiscated—highlighting assimilation practices that tried to eradicate Indigenous cultures.
These shirts and their message arrive at a time of profound grief and mourning.
Less than a month ago, we learned that the remains of 215 Indigenous children had been found in unmarked graves outside of Kamloops, B.C. Today, we learned of the discovery of 751 unmarked graves at a former Saskatchewan residential school.
As Indigenous Peoples grieve these atrocities and Canada’s long history of colonial violence, CUPE Ontario affirms today, and always, that EVERY CHILD MATTERS.
