As your constituent, I want to express my disappointment in your opposition to the construction of accessible, affordable modular housing units in Willowdale to address Toronto’s homelessness and housing crisis. I urge you to call for the quick construction of modular housing units in Willowdale at 175 Cummer Avenue.
The City of Toronto council, Major John Tory, and several councillors, including Councillor Filion, have been supportive of a rapid housing project and support an Ministerial Zoning Order to expedite this urgently needed development. Delaying this project any further will be of dire consequence to those who urgently need accessible, affordable housing as soon as possible.
The need to address our city’s homelessness crisis became all the more urgent during the pandemic. Shelters and other supportive housing options have had to significantly reduce their capacity to quell the spread of COVID-19. As a result, an unprecedented number of individuals have had to survive outdoors or in make-shift encampments. Toronto’s Modular Housing Initiative is a necessary step toward housing approximately 8,700 people who experience homelessness on any given day. Modular housing is an innovative and cost-effective solution that also relieves pressure on shelters that have significantly reduced capacity during COVID-19.
I believe that every single person in Toronto deserves to have access to a home that meets their needs, is affordable, and keeps them safe. Affordable, accessible housing has a number of profound benefits, including providing individuals with a heightened sense of well-being, improved overall health, enhanced mental health, improved financial stability, and more. When people have access to stable, adequate housing, they are better able to access other vital social services, and in turn, find meaningful ways to contribute and connect to their community.
I urge you to support an expedited zoning order and construction process for this important project. As your constituent and supporter of an encompassing housing strategy, I trust that you will wholeheartedly endorse and prioritize this project for the benefit of your constituency and broader community.
