CUPE locals representing almost 8,000 developmental services workers are heading for an unprecedented round of coordinated bargaining in 2009. Close to 50 bargaining units will be at the table at the same time as the Ontario provincial government is changing the way developmental services are funded and delivered. Bill 77, which is expected to receive third reading this fall, focuses on direct funding and opens the door for privatization with the use of private, for-profit brokers. As well, the Ministry of Community and Social Services and employers have been working together to develop new human resources strategies for the sector.
The leadership from CUPE ACL locals will meet in Toronto on September 29 to decide on the coordinated proposals that will be tabled in individual bargaining and an overall strategy for the coordinated bargaining campaign.
