Sarnia, Ont. CUPE 4370, representing 180 frontline developmental service workers, enters mediation with Community Living Sarnia Lambton tomorrow with the intention of reaching a new collective agreement that promotes stability and quality.
Our objective is to achieve a collective agreement that promotes program quality and stability for our members and for the people we support every day to live actively in the community, said President Brian Biggers. We hope that our employer has a similar objective and that, with the help of a provincially-appointed mediator, we will reach a settlement over the next two days.
The union, whose members gave an overwhelming strike mandate last month, could be in a legal strike position at the end of September.
We will be working through the mediator to avert a strike by negotiating a new collective agreement that continues the trend forward established in our last contract, Biggers said. Our members have given us the mandate.
The last contract expired on March 31, 2009. Mediation is scheduled for September 22 and 23.
We are expecting our employer to take the talks seriously and work out a deal that’s fair for the workers and improves our ability to support members of our community who have a developmental disability, said Biggers.
