Union will strengthen bargaining, press for more funding, and act globally
Windsor, ON University workers with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario passed motions today that strengthen the union’s commitment to the right to education.
Today, we broadened and deepened our commitment to fight the chronic underfunding of post-secondary education, and to strengthen the coordination of campus bargaining, said Sid Ryan, President of CUPE Ontario.
We also voted to broaden and deepen our support for the growing international campaign of boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS) directed at the state of Israel for its recent military assault on civilians in Gaza and its ongoing occupation of Palestinian land, Ryan said.
Today’s motion on the Middle East encourages people to seek peaceful ways to resolve the conflict. It affirms the right to education for Palestinians; calls for educational events on campus; encourages research into military connections between Ontario and Israeli universities; and calls on Ontario universities to refuse to conduct research that benefits the Israeli military. The resolution does not call for a boycott of individual Israeli academics.
We are proud of the way CUPE members followed our tradition and engaged in respectful and democratic debate, Ryan said.
