Toronto, Ont. – Service workers at the University of Toronto, members of
CUPE 3261, have ratified a new two-year collective agreement that introduces
a child benefit plan along with wage and benefit improvements.

“We were able to negotiate effectively with U of T, whose negotiators showed respect for our membership,” said Ron Hoinkes, CUPE 3261 president.  “We were particularly pleased to hear them express concern for the well-being of our families.”

Under the new child benefit plan, workers with children under age seven will
be able to claim child care costs beginning in 2009.  The contract also provides:

§  wage increases totaling 6.5% over the two-year term

§  a shift premium increase of 10 cents per hour

§  an early retirement bridge benefit paid by the employer

§  benefit improvements.
