On November 20, we mark the 15th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day to honour and remember our transgender sisters and brothers who have died because of anti-transgender discrimination and victimization.
In Ontario and around the world, transgender individuals and communities are among those most frequently facing violence and discrimination. The attacks are seldom reported, the perpetrators seldom prosecuted.
CUPE Ontario has spent 50 years standing up for fairness for all workers, and we believe strongly in the need to end violence and discrimination against transgender people. It’s why we participate in the Trans March every year. It’s why we pushed hard to help NDP MPP Cheri DiNovo pass Toby’s Law, which amended the Ontario Human Rights Code to include gender identity and expression and makes Ontario the first major jurisdiction in North America to provide human rights protection for transgender people. It’s why we supported Bill C-279, which is now before the Senate and will amend the Criminal Code of Canada to include proper protections against discrimination based on gender identity and gender expression.
Through collective bargaining and political action, we will continue to stand up for fairness and the rights of our transgender sisters and brothers. It is only through our combined strength that we are able to bargain contracts with language that protects people from discrimination and that we are able to press for legislation that advances human rights.
