TORONTO, ON – The Toronto Civic Employees’ Union, Local 416 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), has reached a tentative collective agreement with the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC).
The four-year deal is an improvement on most elements of the settlement recently negotiated by the Union with the City of Toronto, with two significant differences – the deal secures employment protection for those workers with 11 years seniority, and it also restores to the Union more than 100 cleaners positions previously contracted out.
“We are pleased that a number of concessions tabled by the employer were successfully rejected,” said Local 416 Vice President Dave Hewitt. “And it is an important accomplishment to be able to ‘contract in’ the cleaners whose jobs had been eliminated through contracting out.” Hewitt noted Local 416 worked with a number of campaigns, including Justice for Janitors, to achieve the in-sourcing of the cleaner positions.
Together with the recent Toronto City Council decision to review a previous decision to contract out cleaning jobs throughout a number of municipal facilities, this should be seen as further evidence the City is moving away from eliminating jobs through privatization.
The cleaner positions will be fully reinstated in the Union by December 31, 2012.
Members of the Local will vote to ratify the contract tomorrow, April 27, at the Ontario Federation of Labour building located at 15 Gervais Drive. Voting begins at 12pm.
