CUPE sisters led the march celebrating International Women’s Day this past Saturday in Toronto.
Women gathered in their thousands to demonstrate for a more equal and fair world. Labour unions played a big part in the day’s rally and the march that followed.
This year was special for CUPE. The organizers asked CUPE sisters to lead the march to highlight the importance of public services – and the central role that women play in delivering them. Women marched to “reclaim our city”, saying “together we are stronger”. The call for “good jobs, services and dignity” put public services squarely in the middle of the march.

The official IWD date is March 8. To mark the occasion this year, CUPE Ontario is sponsoring a performance of Mary Walsh’s new play, Dancing With Rage, this Thursday night. The show promises to “navigate the rage brought on by pop culture, politics and capitalism”.
Walsh is widely known and loved for her work on This Hour Has 22 Minutes and other TV and movie productions. She is perhaps most famously known as the politician-skewering Warrior Princess, Marg Delahunty. Most recently, the Warrior Princess stirred up Toronto Mayor Rob Ford when Walsh arrived at his home early in the morning to grill him on why he was hiding from the media while trying to cut city services.
Mayor Ford didn’t get the joke – and ended up calling 911.
