As classes resumed last week at Ryerson University in Toronto, students were greeted by a flashmob in white masks. The demonstration on September 8 drew attention to the Walk 4 Justice, which arrived in Toronto that day.
The walk, which began in Vancouver on June 21, is calling on all levels of government to recognize and acknowledge the issues around the disappearance and murder of women across Canada.
Walk founders Bernie Williams and Gladys Radek were on hand to share stories with the crowd about the women in their own families who have gone missing or been murdered.
“This equates to genocide, as the missing and murdered aboriginal women are typically in their childbearing years,” Bernie Williams said.
CUPE Ontario Equality Branch staff member Melanie Poulin also shared her family’s experience when her cousin from the Nishnawbe-Aski Nation was brutally murdered by her spouse.
“There is a disproportionate number of aboriginal women compared to non-aboriginal women who have gone missing or been murdered over the years,” says Poulin.
