CUPE Ontario recognizes school crossing guards on Ontario’s annual School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day, that takes place this year on March 23, 2022.

School crossing guards are vital to help ensure that children safely cross the street during their routes to and from school. They also remind drivers of the presence of pedestrians at intersections.

CUPE encourages community members to show their appreciation and support for their local crossing guards by thanking them for their important service. Additionally, CUPE members and the broader community are invited to download and share this social media graphic on March 23, 2022, to commemorate the day and encourage other to recognize this vital work that helps keep communities safe.

Here are other ways to support your local School Crossing Guard:

  • Drivers and cyclists must yield to pedestrians at crossovers, school crossings and locations where there is a crossing guard.
  • Drivers and cyclists are not to cross until pedestrians and crossing guards have safely cleared the roadway
  • Drive or cycle cautiously though school zones, residential areas, and other areas where children are present
