TORONTO, ON (Wednesday, May 30, 2018) – More than 1000 CUPE Ontario delegates are coming together from May 30 to June 2, for the union’s annual convention being held at the Toronto Sheraton Center.

An election year for the union, delegates will be voting for the positions of President, Secretary-Treasurer, Vice-Presidents, Diversity Chairs and Member-at-Large. Delegates are set to debate policy resolutions, hear from keynote speakers and vote on the action plan for the year ahead.

Given the timing of the convention the Ontario provincial election will also be a key focus of the four days, with federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh addressing delegates on behalf of Ontario leader Andrea Horwath.

“This year’s convention theme: Be Bold. Be Brave. Demand Better, is about what we do as a union every day. We speak out. We raise expectations. And we demand better from our employers and from our governments,” says Fred Hahn, President of CUPE Ontario. “We are incredibly proud of the work our members do all across this province and we’re looking forward to setting our agenda for the year ahead.”

“Every day our members show strength and courage in our collective fight to build a fairer province,” says Candace Rennick, the union’s Secretary-Treasurer. “There is nothing more inspiring than being in a room of more than 1000 people who have been working tirelessly to make sure people in their communities have good jobs and access to the public services they need.”
