Keep Home Care and Hospital Services Public and Guarantee Employment Security for LHIN Workers

Reforms under Bill 175 will hasten and encourage privatization of home care and hospital services.  Thousands of jobs at Local Health Integration Networks are at great threat.  These are the wrong reforms at the wrong time.

CUPE Ontario is asking you to sign this letter to tell the Doug Ford PC government  to keep home care coordination and hospital services public and guarantee employment security and fair working conditions for the dedicated staff at Local Health Integration Networks.  Ask your friends, family, and co-workers to do the same!

Dear Premier and MPP,

I am very concerned that despite a pandemic, your government is rushing ahead with chaotic changes to our health care system that will undermine patient access to home and community care and privatize hospital care.

I want to be clear that I am vehemently opposed to increasing private delivery of health services in Ontario and I am asking you to stop the reforms underway with Bill 175 that will hasten and encourage privatization of home care and hospital services.

By dismantling Ontario’s health networks – that coordinate home and community care – and dispersing their role to hundreds of different health service providers – some of which will be for-profit, your government is party to a backdoor privatization reform that will hurt patients and the mostly female workforce who deliver these services.

Your reforms will also privatize hospital services by expanding the role of private hospitals; allowing unlicensed for-profit operators to set up makeshift care in hotels and other spaces; and allow home care companies – many for-profit — to care for patients in hospitals.

These are the wrong reforms at the wrong time.

I want your government to promise to keep home care coordination and hospital services public and guarantee employment security and fair working conditions for the dedicated staff at Local Health Integration Networks.

Yours Truly,
