Statement adopted by the CUPE Ontario Executive Board March 4, 2020
CUPE Ontario is deeply concerned about the recent rise of hate directed at Indigenous people, in particular the land defenders of the Tyendinaga Mohawks, following widespread support from community and working-class activists for Wet’suwet’en land rights.
CUPE Ontario calls on levels of governments to:
▪︎Treat all Indigenous peoples with the respect due them and recognize their inalienable right to protect those areas of the land under their stewardship.
▪︎Drop all conditions to dialogue with the Indigenous hereditary leaders.
▪︎Remove the police and corporate pipeline employees from indigenous land until negotiations are concluded.
▪︎Dialogue for alternative solutions, including the options put forward by the hereditary chiefs for an alternate route of the pipeline.
