Sudbury, ON — Sudbury’s embattled MPP embroiled in election scandal has something new to answer for. At a meeting recently with laid off Sudbury hospital laundry workers, Health Sciences North (HSN) board members pointed to Glenn Thibeault’s Liberal government as the reason why the hospital is severing its laundry contract with a local provider and taking the business to a “shared” hospital services company in Hamilton.

“The hospital board strongly suggested to our people at the meeting that cutting the local contract is a directive of the provincial government. They seem to believe that failure to comply with the province could have resulted in less funding for HSN. But one would think that the cost of job loss to 40 families would far outweigh what the hospital says it is cutting from its budget by taking its business out of Sudbury,” says Michael Hurley president of the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions (OCHU/CUPE).

Hurley will be among those at a rally today at 4 p.m. at Thibeault’s area office
555 Barry Downe Rd, Sudbury. This is the second community rally in support of the Sudbury Hospital Services laundry workers held at Thibeault’s office.

“We urge Mr. Thibeault to look beyond his personal political problems and focus more on the needs of his constituents and the 40 laundry workers who are losing their jobs because of his government’s policy,” says Hurley.

The laid off workers are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).
