We are holding public consultations about our public hospitals. We want to hear your ideas about how our public hospitals can be the revitalized and reformed in the public interest. For example, in areas where there are new hospitals planned, people are concerned about multiple local hospitals closing down, the P3 privatization of their hospitals, or the location of new hospitals being too far away. We want to hear, first hand, how hospital cuts have reduced access to needed services, changed how work is done, and led to privatization. We want to know what you think about hospital boards that are no longer elected by the community or executive salaries that have ballooned. We also want to hear the positives — many people experience excellent life-saving and life-enhancing care. Leading into next spring’s provincial election, we want to forge an agenda to fund our hospitals properly, and to ensure that funding goes to care. We want to hold all of the political parties’ plans up against our proposals and see where they can be improved. Join us to help make our communities’ hospitals the best they can be.

Guidelines for submissions

We are seeking written or oral submissions. Submissions can be formal, such as a formal written brief or oral presentation; or informal, such as a letter or just a few key points that you present in person at your local hearing. All are welcome to give input, attend the hearings and participate. We would like to be as inclusive as possible.

The points below are some suggestions to help as you think about giving us your input. You need not address all the points we have raised here. We hope that you will focus on those that impact you, your family and your community, or those with whom you work.

We would like to hear your ideas about:

Positive practices, experiences and observations about hospital care, planning, governance, management and/or organization.

Improving planning and access to care.

How can access to care be improved?

This might include: What services are needed in our communities? Are there gaps in services that you have experienced or observed? What needed public hospital services have been cut?

Have you tried to access care and had problems?

What are the particular issues of concern regarding hospital planning in your area? How can planning processes be improved?

This might include: Does you hospital plan to meet the needs of your community? Is there a plan to meet needs as the community grows and ages, for example? Is there meaningful public input into planning for hospital services in your area?

Properly funding Ontario’s hospitals.

Are current approaches to funding working to provide the services that our communities need?

What are your ideas to ensure that funding goes to care and needed support services in our hospitals?

Improving quality of care.

Are the current systems to measure and track care and outcomes working to improve care levels and quality in your community?

What are your ideas to improve quality and appropriateness of care

Improving public ownership and democratic control.

How can hospital boards and governance systems be improved to be more democratic, representative and accountable?

Have you tried to access information from your hospital and how can public access to information be improved?

How has privatization of hospital services impacted your community?

Re-integrating care: Are there services that have been cut or offloaded from hospitals that should be restored to improve care and restore public ownership?

Ensuring hospitals best serve the diverse needs of our communities.

We are interested in hearing your experiences and your ideas about how public hospital care can be more inclusive and equitable.

Are there specific and unique needs in rural and northern communities that we should address?

All are welcome to come, watch the hearings and participate in the discussion.
