Thorold, Ont. – The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario will hold a media conference on Thursday, August 21 at 10:30 a.m. in Thorold to outline how provincial underfunding and privatization are threatening the quality of local public services including health care and social services.

“Residents have bought and paid for these public services. Yet cuts to social services and
so-called ‘restructuring’ by the provincial health ministry is going to cut or relocate vital health services across the region,” says CUPE Ontario Secretary-Treasurer Fred Hahn.

The media conference will also address the loss of good jobs and the resulting economic impact on local communities when governments contract out services to private operators or enter into expensive public-private partnerships (P3s) to build community facilities.

Date: Thursday, August 21, 2008
Media Conference: 10:30 a.m.
Location: CUPE 1287 Office, 133 Front Street North, Thorold

Along with Fred Hahn, speakers will include Diane Cormier, a health care worker and member of the Local Health Care Coalition, as well as Carolyn Taylor, President of
CUPE 1287 representing social workers in the region.

This media conference is being held the day before CUPE Ontario hosts a free rock concert with April Wine in Thorold to highlight the need to preserve public services that are the bedrock of strong communities.
