SUDBURY, Ont. – The introduction of the provincial government’s new Ontario Child Benefit (OCB) this month will leave thousands of low-income children without back-to-school and winter clothing allowances. The situation is so dire that some municipalities like Sudbury are choosing to step up to pay the allowances themselves.

This Tuesday, anti-poverty advocates and Sid Ryan, Ontario President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) that represents social workers, will discuss how the new Child Benefit is creating ‘have’ and ‘have not’ communities for children by downloading the decision to offer these allowances to municipalities.

They will discuss the impact on local families that receive social assistance and the inequities in the north arising from the implementation of the new program.

At this media conference:

Date:  Tuesday, July 22, 2008
Time: 2:00 p.m.
Location: CUPE 4705,  790 LaSalle Blvd,   Montrose Mall, Sudbury

Speakers will include:

• Bev Patchell, front line social service worker
• Sid Ryan, CUPE Ontario President
• Wyman MacKinnon, President, CUPE 4705
