Durham District School Board workers have won their battle to save19 EA positions. The board had planned to cut 19 EA 2 positions by September and possibly 27 more next year.
CUPE 218, representing over 2,500 school board workers, mounted a campaign to stop the cuts from being approved. The local mobilized their members, worked closely with community groups and concerned parents and reached out to the media to publicize the board’s decision to dismantle educational services in Durham.
Following a strong public response to CUPE’s campaign, the board rescinded their decision to cut the 19 EA position for the next school year and will now review student needs to assess the entire situation.
This is a victory for our community quality education won, said Don Bryans, president of CUPE 218. We want to thank the community for their strong support to stop the EA cuts that would have hurt special needs students in our schools.
We had about 10 days to stop the cuts, said Marion Moore, EA and CUPE 218 unit chair. We mobilized our members, worked with CUPE staff to mount a campaign to reach the public, media and the board. This victory shows how a community can come together in a short time to fight for quality education.
