WHITBY, Ont. – Fred Hahn, CUPE Ontario President, along with Candace Rennick, CUPE Ontario Secretary-Treasurer and other supporters will lead a ‘Fair Contract for All’ solidarity rally for the striking Durham ‘inside’ municipal workers on Wednesday, June 25 at 12:00 noon.

“As both parties return to the bargaining table on Thursday to resume negotiations and end this dispute, our supporters will be here for a ‘Fair Contract for All’ solidarity rally and BBQ,” said Pauline Hopley, president of CUPE 1764. “Council will be meeting inside the Region chambers and we will be outside with our supporters demanding a fair contract for all our members.”

“We have proposed a settlement package to end this strike which will allow our members to go back to serving Durham residents,” said Hopley. “We are hoping that management will return to the table on Thursday with the intention to settle a fair contract and end this unnecessary strike.”

When:             Wednesday, June 25 at noon

The workers are on strike because of Durham Region’s attempt to strip emergency medical workers (EMS) of their sick leave provisions. “How can council and management attack EMS workers’ sick leave when all they do is take care of the sick, the injured and residents in crisis,” said Hopley. “We’ve offered our employer many different ways to avoid this dispute and we continue to offer solutions to end this strike. Our goal for Thursday is to negotiate a fair deal that will end this dispute and we hope management and council feel the same way.”
