TORONTO — Child care workers at Kids and Company locations in Toronto, Ajax and Ottawa have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action if they are not able to reach a first contract.

The members of CUPE 4823 have been trying for almost a year to negotiate a first contract with the company, which operates child care centres in Ontario and Alberta. CUPE represents almost 140 workers at eight centres in Toronto, one in Ajax, Ontario and one in Ottawa.

“These child care workers want their employer to know they are serious about getting a collective agreement that provides a fair wage and benefits, addresses workplace health and safety, and other issues such as job security,” said CUPE National Representative Jim Morrison. “They have given their bargaining committee an overwhelming strike mandate.”

The union and the employer are scheduled to meet with a conciliator on October 29.

“We hope we can reach a settlement without having to take job action,” Morrison said.
