Ontario Government, School Board Workers and Students Join Forces to Stop Bullying


RICHMOND HILL, ON – Canadian Union of Public Employees’ (CUPE) Ontario President Fred Hahn will join Ontario Minister of Education, Laurel Broten, and Ontario Student Trustee’s Association (OSTA) President Jenny Williams to express support for the provincial government’s Bill 13 – Accepting Schools Act to prevent bullying.


Bill 13, introduced by Minister Broten on November 30, 2011 would, if passed, mandate that all school boards across Ontario must support students who want to form organizations that promote equality and advocate for a learning environment free of discriminatory bullying, including organizations with the name gay-straight alliance.


Before the press conference, Minister Broten, Fred Hahn and Jenny Williams, will each address the 350 delegates attending CUPE Ontario’s annual Ontario School Boards Coordinating Committee (OSBCC) Conference.  The OSBCC represents more than 50,000 school board workers across the province working as educational assistants, custodians, paraprofessionals, early childhood educators, office and clerical workers, instructors, library technicians, maintenance and in information technology.

WHY?             Partnering up to raise awareness on bullying in schools


It is estimated that 160,000 children miss school everyday due to the fear of bullying by other students (National Education Assoc.). This initiative is a positive step in the fight to keep our schools a safe environment for all.
