Raise the Rates Solidarity BBQ – St. Catharines, August 21, 2011

The Solidarity BBQ held at Montebello Park in St. Catharines on August 21 was a huge success. Well over 300 people participated throughout the day to support the Raise the Rates campaign, and to join the fight to restore the Special Diet Allowance.

Speakers at the BBQ included Dan  Crow from CUPE 4207/CUPE Ontario Executive Board, and John Clarke from the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty. Volunteers from locals affiliated with the Niagara District CUPE Council (including locals 150, 151, 157, 1263, 1287, 1295, 4156, and 4207) and from the Niagara Regional Labour Council prepared and served food and helped organize games and face painting for kids. Local musicians Chantal Barrette and Jesse T. Reid performed for the crowd.

After the BBQ a few dozen people stayed to develop strategies to fight poverty in the Niagara Region, and to make plans to keep organizing behind the Raise the Rates campaign. We will be meeting again in Montebello Park on Sunday August 28 to build on the success of the Solidarity BBQ.
