KINGSTON, Ont. – Kingston’s community campaign in support of local hospital food and the local economy continues to gain support and momentum from across the province.

On Monday, March 28, 2011, at 11:45 a.m., outside Kingston General Hospital’s (KGH’s) main entrance, busloads of local food activists, farmers, environmentalists and health care workers from across Ontario will be in Kingston rallying to get the McGuinty government to reconsider its support for KGH’s outsourcing of patient food.

Many of those attending the Kingston rally Monday will be calling on their local MPPs to push Ontario’s health minister to act now to stop the KGH food deal with a factory-food operation more than 300 km away from Kingston.

Throughout the province, hospital workers and local food activists are appalled by the lack of commitment by the Ontario Liberal government to local sourcing and adherence to the government’s own procurement policies in order to boost local economies.

The Ontario Liberals “are going against the growing number of people in communities across Ontario who support the local food movement.  It’s these people who are calling on the Liberals to act now and stop the KGH deal,” said Michael Hurley, President of the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions (OCHU).

Kingston area farmers will join the rally with a convoy of farm machinery.  Guest speakers at the rally include: Dianne Dowling, Kingston Local Vice-President, National Farmers Union (NFU); Fred Hahn, the Ontario President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE); Debbie Wells, President, Kingston District Labour Council (KDLC); Michael Hurley, President, Ontario Council of Hospital Unions (OCHU/CUPE), and others.
