Peel long-term care workers take pay equity case to regional council

More than 700 members of CUPE 966 need your help to get seven years of back pay owed to them under the Pay Equity Plan they negotiated with Peel Region. And hundreds more need to have the Pay Equity Plan include them. You can tell Peel you think they should live up to the law by voting at itsthelaw.ca.

CUPE and the Region of Peel negotiated a Pay Equity Plan, as required by law, in 1992. Fifteen years later, women who worked in Peel’s long-term care centres got their back pay – up to 2003. They are still owed back pay from 2003 up to today.

In the meantime, two more long-term care centres have opened. Management refuses to extend the terms of the Pay Equity Plan to these skilled health care workers at all. They get the old rate.

CUPE 966 has applied to the Ontario Pay Equity Commission to have the 1992 Pay Equity Plan enforced under the law. We are also working to have the negotiated Pay Equity Plan extended to cover the workers in the two newer facilities.

This will finally end decades of wage discrimination for workers in Peel’s long-term care centres.
What do you think? Should women be paid the same as men for comparable work? Vote at itsthelaw.ca.
