CUPE - Ontario

On July 20th, 2010 Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan called unions and employers to a closed door “consultation” session to announce the government's intention to launch a series of “consultations” aimed at implementing its “zero-zero” two year public sector wage freeze.

This proposed governmental policy will hinder the economic recovery and inhibit consumer spending says Fred Hahn, President of CUPE Ontario.  In response to this proposed policy an emergency meeting was declared by CUPE Ontario.

At the All Locals Emergency Meeting on August 25th and 26th, members gave the mandate to "Grow the economy, protect public services and defend free collective bargaining".  The CUPE Ontario Executive took this to the province with talks beginning on August 30th.

With no substantive response from the government, CUPE Ontario is continuing to assess where the government is headed with this proposed policy, and we continue to work with other unions to keep our stance clear.
