LONDON, Ont. – The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario is launching a new hotline for patients affected by a spate of home care cuts in London, Grey/Bruce and many communities across southwestern Ontario.

The 1-888 hotline number will be announced at a media conference in London on Tuesday, December 16, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the London Public Library Central Branch, 251 Dundas Street in the Stevenson Room.

At the end of November CUPE Ontario alerted London and southwest residents that hundreds of area patients were being denied home care or had their care hours cut under new qualifying criteria.

At the same time, similar cuts were happening in the Windsor/Erie/St. Clair area. In those communities, significant public backlash pushed the health minister into announcing an additional $4.1 million injection of funding for home care.

“Home care is supposed to be there when you need it. Cuts to this critical care are a problem whether you live in Windsor or London or Thunder Bay. That’s why we are back in London today to announce our new hotline. Patients needing home care can call, share their story and know their concerns will be heard. We want to track the gaps in care,” said Fred Hahn, CUPE Ontario president who will be at tomorrow’s media conference along with Heather Duff a community access centre worker.
