Peel Children’s Aid Society Workers have been on strike since September 18 in order to secure a safer, healthier and more dignified working environment.

The 435 members of CUPE 4914 have been without a collective agreement since March 31. While many issues have been dealt with in bargaining, a number remain outstanding, including language around workloads and working conditions. Management’s refusal to negotiate on these issues is denying people in Peel Region the vital services they depend on.

Dear Premier Wynne and Minister Coteau,

I am very concerned about the lack of action in finding a resolution to the strike at Peel Children’s Aid Society. These workers have been off the job since September and our community needs them back at work, helping vulnerable children, youth and families.

As I understand it, this strike is not about wages and that the biggest issue is workload levels that are so high, they put kids at risk of falling through the cracks. The consequences when Children’s Aid Workers are not able to provide the necessary attention to a case can be severe and even fatal.

Other area CAS’s have put caseload caps in place that are working well, including Durham Region which is comparable in size and funding to our agency in Peel. Why does the Executive Director of Peel say this isn’t possible to protect the kids in our community?

I understand that the employer has refused to end the strike by sending the workload issue to binding arbitration. It is time for you to step in and help bring a resolution to this serious problem.

Thank you.
