April 9 Rally for Respect Draws 10,000. Click here to find out what’s next

On April 9, thousands of concerned Toronto residents joined hands with community groups and the labour movement to demand Respect for all people in Toronto.
Police estimated the crowd at Yonge-Dundas Square to be as high as 10,000 people, who then marched to Toronto City Hall to call on Mayor Rob Ford and other City Councillors to show respect for all residents—not just a very fortunate few.
A large CUPE contingent attended the rally, with representation from many Toronto-area CUPE Locals, as well as busloads of members from a number of other communities across the province.
Representatives from student groups, social justice organizations, environmental groups, women’s groups and anti-poverty organizations—to name a few—showed their solidarity with working people from both the private and public sector to make the April 9 rally a huge success.
In recent months we have seen an unprecedented amount of cuts to services in Toronto. Closures, system-wide cuts and decreased services are burdening our communities. All of Ontario may be at risk with the current mayoral agenda of further cutting and privatizing services.

• Public transit services in our neighbourhoods
• Environmental leadership in challenging climate change
• Keeping public control of public services
• Safeguarding vital public assets
• Ensuring that good jobs and the fundamental rights of workers remain intact
